Meet the new A.C.E. staff!

A.C.E. warmly welcomes five new staff members to the team.  In typical A.C.E. style, each one brings a breadth and variety of international experience and we are excited to learn more from and about each of them.  Check out each of their individual introductions below and you will see what we mean!

Mary Ulrich

Meet Mary Ulrich, Assistant Director at A.C.E. Language Institute at MSU. Mary moved back to Montana in 2008 from a few years abroad (Mozambique) and is completing an Ed.D. with an emphasis in Adult and Higher Education at Montana State University.  She has an MA in Intercultural Communication and a BA in History and Spanish Language.  Her teaching background includes working in EFL overseas (South Korea) and ESL/Second Language Writing in New Mexico.  While in Mozambique, she worked as an Education Specialist on a USDOL grant to eliminate exploitative child labor.  She enjoys traveling, but also being at home in the beautiful Gallatin Valley to enjoy the Montana outdoors!

Andrew Turgeon

Meet Andrew Turgeon, Enrollment Services Coordinator at the A.C.E. central office in Seattle since November 2011.  Andrew graduated from the University of Vermont with a degree in Geography and Latin American Studies. He speaks excellent Spanish, having spent time in Peru as a Rotary Exchange student as well as studying abroad in both Ecuador and Argentina.  Andrew has experience working in youth and community development at home and abroad.

Dan Carniaux

Meet Dan Carniaux, Program Coordinator for the new Language Institute at the University of Rhode Island. Dan recently moved from France, where he was pursuing graduate courses in Cultural Translation at the American University of Paris. He is an avid learner of language and culture, and considers travel equally formative to his career; past experiences have brought him to Quebec, Europe, Turkey, Hong Kong and China. He currently speaks Mandarin, French, German and Spanish. After several years of migration, Dan is now home in Rhode Island. As a native to the state’s scenic “South County”, he enjoys kayaking, fishing and hiking along the region’s shores and interior hills. He also takes advantage of the local film and art scenes of Providence and Newport. Dan is eager to share his home state’s natural and cultural resources with students, and hopes to make them an integral part of the American experience at A.C.E. He has several projects in store for the Language Institute, and looks forward to its continued growth at URI.

Mizie So

Meet Mizie So, Office Coordinator at A.C.E. Language Institute at SPU.  Mizie is Korean American, born and raised in Washington.  She completed a bachelor’s degree at the University of Washington in English and Japanese. She is fluent in Korean and Japanese and can also speak a little Dari, the official language of Afghanistan where she spent 6 months teaching English to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. (Mizie says Dari very similar to Farsi!). While in Afghanistan, she also helped to set up little schools in villages through a non-profit organization.  She loves to travel and learn about new cultures and has traveled to Korea, Palestine, Israel, Dubai, Uzbekistan, and Afghanistan.  She loves learning about and experiencing new cultures, and loves to learn languages.  She is also a total foodie  and willing to try just about anything (which she says makes traveling more fun). She is currently working on my K-12 certification in ESL and ELL at SPU as well as her MA-TESOL degree.  She hopes to build many international relationships for and through A.C.E. and to continue to share her experiences with those around her.

Ben Kantner
Meet Ben Kantner, the newest member of the Enrollment Services team! Ben has spent extended periods of time studying in both Brazil and Japan, and prides himself on regularly seeking out any opportunity to experience a new place—whether in Seattle or abroad.  Most recently, he researched connections between culture and the natural environment in southeastern Brazil.  In his free time, he likes to explore the outdoors through hiking or skiing.  He also loves music and enjoys researching new artists and attending live shows.
